CAHIIM Accreditation
We are pleased to announce that the Associate of Occupational Science in Health Information Technology (HIT) program at the Orange County campus of American Career College is programmatically accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM). CAHIIM 233 N. Michigan Avenue, 21st Floor, Chicago, IL 60601-5800; phone (312) 233-1100 www.cahiim.org
Why is this Important?
Health Information Technology involves the exchange of health information in an electronic environment. Widespread use of health IT within the health care industry will improve the quality of health care, prevent medical errors, reduce health care costs, increase administrative efficiencies, decrease paperwork, and expand access to affordable health care. It is imperative that the privacy and security of electronic health information be ensured as this information is maintained and transmitted electronically.
Electronic health records are a major theme throughout the Affordable Health Care Act and require hospitals to update their employee skill sets within a limited window of time. This urgency is the primary driver of demand for employees with this specific skill set.
Students who desire to sit for the RHIT license must graduate from a CAHIIM-accredited program. Although most RHITs work in hospitals, you will also find them in a variety of other healthcare settings including office-based physician practices, nursing homes, home health agencies, mental health facilities, and public health agencies. In fact, employment opportunities exist for RHITs in any organization that uses patient data or health information, such as pharmaceutical companies, law and insurance firms, and health product vendors.
Programs vary by campus. Program lengths vary by session and schedule. Financial aid available to those who qualify. ACC cannot guarantee employment.
