The Systems Engineering Distance Learning degree requires 30 credit hours of instruction. Of those, at least two credit hours will be delivered in the form of face-to-face modules. Seven credits will be delivered in the form of systems engineering project work supervised by Cornell faculty.
The remaining 21 credit hours will be delivered by means of these seven courses which make special use of our distance-learning technology.
• Applied Systems Engineering (3 credits, Fall)
• Systems Architecture, Behavior, and Optimization (3 credits, Spring)
• Systems Engineering for the Design and Operation of Reliable Systems (3 credits, Fall)
• Systems Engineering Management for Virtual Teams (1 credit, Summer)
• Creativity and Innovation within Systems Engineering (1 credit, Summer)
• Principles of Project Leadership (3 credits, Spring)
• Risk Analysis and Management (3 credits, Spring)
• Computer Networks and Telecommunications (3 credits, Fall)
• Entrepreneurship for Scientists and Engineers (3 credits, Fall)
ORIE 5126/5127 (4 credits broken into two 2-credit sections)
• Supply Chain Management (2 credits, Spring)
• Operations Research Applications in Supply Chain Management (2 credits, Spring; Prerequisite: Supply Chain Management)
Elective Courses
Approved electives account for the remaining credits to reach the minimum of 30 credits required for the degree. They are to be chosen from the following areas:
• Systems Modeling and Analysis (at least 1 course): Courses that enrich the understanding of generic methods to design and analyze systems including courses in simulation, feedback and control, decision-making, reliability analysis, and risk analysis.
• Systems Applications: Courses that provide depth in the design and operation of specific systems such as power, communication, software, manufacturing, and transportation.
• Systems Management (at most 1 course): Courses that enhance student understanding of the management activities and processes which are necessary to successfully design and operate systems.
Four courses are currently available in distance-learning format which complete the Distance Learning M.Eng. degree curriculum. The faculty and staff of the College of Engineering is currently working to bring additional elective courses online throughout the coming years. The current distance learning electives are:
• Systems Engineering for the Design and Operation of Reliable Systems (3 credits)
• Risk Analysis and Management (3 credits)
• Computer Networks and Telecommunications (3 credits)
• Entrepreneurship for Scientists and Engineers (3 credits)
