The Associate of Applied Science degree in Occupational Therapy Assistant prepares the student for positions in hospitals, nursing homes, outpatient clinics, and schools. Many OTAs work in the offices of physical, occupational and speech therapists.

What do OTAs do?

Help patients perform therapeutic activities, such as specific stretches and other physical exercises. Work with children who have developmental disabilities, leading them in play activities that promote coordination and motor skills. Teach patients how to use special equipment that improve their daily life skills. Record patients progress, report to occupational therapists and perform other administrative tasks.

In addition to classroom experience, this program will also include a 16–week internship of full–time, on–the–job application of skills.

After accreditation of the program has been obtained, qualified graduates may be eligible to sit for the national certification examination for the occupational therapy assistant administered by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT). The NBCOT is located at 12 South Summit Av., Suite 100, Gaithersburg, MD 20877, telephone number 301-990-7979 web site www.nbcot.org.  After successful completion of this exam, the individual will become a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA). In addition, most states require licensure in order to practice; however, state licenses are usually based on the results of the NBCOT Certification Examination. Note that students must complete their Level II fieldwork within 12 months following completion of the didactic portion of the program.

Medical Assistants perform both administrative and clinical duties, reporting directly to an office manager, physician, or other health practitioner.

Your training will focus on examining room procedures, obtaining vital signs and medical histories, performing routine laboratory procedures, sterilizing and maintaining equipment, and the proper techniques for administering medications as directed by the physician. You'll also learn to handle administrative duties.

Do you want a career in which you can help people feel better while improving your own job outlook? Then the exciting new Pharmacy Technician program at Virginia College could be perfect for you.

Pharmacy technicians work with licensed pharmacists, helping with patient consultations, counter dispensing operations, and prescription preparation. You may work in a retail pharmacy, stocking and keeping inventory of prescriptive and over-the-counter medications. You might also maintain patient medication records, count or pour medications into dispensing containers, and manage the cash register.

In hospitals, you could perform many of the same duties but have other responsibilities, including assembling medications for each patient, repackaging medications, preparing commercially-unavailable medications, and delivering medications to patient rooms.
