Like many of its neighbor states, Kentucky's leading industries are agriculture, manufacturing, and mining. Today, Kentucky's unemployment rate is below the national average, and its economy has remained fairly stable despite the national recession. According to the Kentucky Department of Labor, some of the top job opportunities should be in health care, technology, professional services, and education.

Between 2006 and 2016, the health care industry should see significant employment growth, led by registered nurses (30.4 percent growth). Nursing aides should expect 23 percent employment growth and medical assistants should enjoy 31 percent growth. Another profitable job market is education, in which elementary school teachers should expect 14.8 percent job growth.
