Michigan: Economic Outlook
The automotive industry has been the heart and soul of the Michigan economy for years. In light of the recent collapse of that industry, Michigan's economy has been reeling. As of July, 2009, the unemployment rate in Michigan reached 15 percent--well above the national average.
Despite the rough times, there are bright spots within Michigan's economy. New industries are developing, along with new job markets.
Rebuilding Industry in Michigan
Manufacturing and the automotive industries remain vital to Michigan's economy; however, new employment opportunities are emerging in profitable markets like health care, education, research, as well as the aerospace industry. According to Michigan's Department of Labor, health care support positions, such as home health aides, physical therapist aides, and occupational therapy aides should see solid job opportunities. Other industries, such as social services, technology, and professional services should also expect job growth between 2006 and 2016.
