Guide to Sports and Fitness Degree Programs
There are a number of fitness instructor certifications available to those who want to provide group exercise instruction in gyms. Most fitness instructor certifications require candidates to hold cardiopulmonary (CPR) certification, while some also require first aid certification.
Fitness training certification is usually via an exam, with study programs usually lasting between three and six months and covering all aspects of fitness training. Although not always a requirement of fitness instructor certification, some practical experience of fitness training in the health and fitness field will always be an asset.
As well as the fundamentals of kinesiology, anatomy, and physiology, students will learn about basic nutrition, weight management, and the techniques of correct fitness training. Fitness instructor certification exams also cover the principles of designing exercise classes. The legal and ethical considerations surrounding fitness training are also strongly taken into consideration in fitness instructor certification studies.
