| WELCOME
TO THE 2008 TABS CONFERENCE |
Baltimore is a coastal town, balanced between
the certainty of soil and the beckoning of
water. More specifically it’s a harbor town—a haven from the rigors of travel, yet also a launching point charged with all the energy and excitement of new journeys, new adventures.
With our 11th Annual Conference, TABS enters
its second decade of sponsoring the only North
American professional meeting for boarding school professionals.
This year, our theme is “Leading Schools.” Through four days, two keynote addresses, seven innovative pre-conference workshops, more than sixty main sessions, and perhaps one or two fun surprises, we’ll explore what it means to lead a boarding school department, function, or entire community in the 21st century. We’ll also aim to get you hearing, thinking, and talking about the ways our schools do today—and might tomorrow—lead within larger educational and societal contexts.
Our Conference hotel, the outstanding Renaissance
Harborplace Hotel, with a simply unmatched
location on the Inner Harbor, puts you at the center of fine restaurants,
great shopping, and fascinating attractions—including the world-renowned Baltimore Aquarium. Here, join Heads—and leaders and practitioners from every key administrative discipline—to measure challenges, address core issues, and examine tough questions. Yet know we won’t forget that we also gather at the TABS Conference each year in order to salute friendships and celebrate one another’s service and success. Whether you’re a seasoned veteran or brand new to boarding schools; an Associate Head or an Assistant Director; an Admission officer, a Communications manager, or an Academic Dean—you’ll leave our conference with big dreams, timely and time-tested skills, and a sense of camaraderie and support no other conference quite replicates. We committed to an event that is equal parts wisdom and warmth, as professional and personal as our schools at their best.
Whether you’re seeking a haven, a launch, or just a port’s bustling trade of ideas, I hope you’ll make plans now to join us at “Leading Schools.” If we’ve met, I look forward to seeing you again; if not, I look forward to meeting you, and personally welcoming you to Baltimore.
Enthusiastically,

Peter Upham, Executive Director
The Association of Boarding Schools
