Listservs
| Using
Listservs | Rules
and Regulations | Etiquette |
TABS offers this service only to member schools in order to improve
communication throughout the boarding school community. These lists
provide an excellent opportunity for the exchange of ideas and an
opportunity to seek advice from colleagues who face similar professional
challenges.
When a message is sent to the
mailing list, every subscriber to the list will
receive the message and will have the opportunity
to respond to the entire group (by
replying to the message) or directly
to the sender (by entering the sender's
personal email address in the "Reply
To" field). Generally the content
of a message will determine whether the
sender wants an open discussion or a personal
reply. Subscribers should use discretion
when replying to any mailing list memo.
Before subscribing to a mailing list, please
carefully read the instructions, rules
and regulations, and mailing
list etiquette. By subscribing
to a TABS mailing list, you certify that
you have read and understood these guidelines.
If these guidelines are not followed, you
will be removed from the mailing list.

Using Listservs
Posting
-
If you would like to send a message
to the mailing list, send your email
message to:
ListName@lists.schools.com (i.e.,
international@lists.schools.com).
Please note that you must be a subscriber to a list before posting a message,
and you must be using your own mail account. A subscriber will not be able
to send messages from email accounts not registered on the mailing list.
-
When preparing a mailing list message,
be sure to include a detailed subject
line. This is the first thing subscribers
will see when they receive your message.
Messages with no subjects or vaguely
worded subjects will probably be ignored
or deleted. So grab your mailing list
cohorts with precise subject lines.
-
Remember
that the content of your email message
will be viewed by many. Pay close attention
to your wording in messages. Make sure
it's clear and to the point. It's a
good idea to review the etiquette page
for more specific information on messaging.
Replying
Replying to a message on a list is so
easy that, if you aren't careful, you
may find yourself in an embarrassing
situation. Here's a few pointers that
will hopefully prevent any mishaps.
Replying to All Subscribers
-
When you receive a message, you will
know it came from a list subscriber by
the subject line. A subject will have
a prefix beginning with the name of the
list such as [reslife]. This is generated
by the mailing list server, so you will
never have to type that in the subject.
-
When you reply to that message, the
default is automatically set to send
your reply to the entire list, NOT just
the person sending the message. Emailing
everyone is encouraged since it promotes
an ongoing dialog. Others will read your
response and may want to respond with
additional information or comments.
-
When you do reply to a list message,
it's a good idea to keep the original
message within the body of the text and
add your response above it. Subscribers
can then reference the previous message
when reading your response.
Replying to One Subscriber
Occasionally you will want to respond to
a message without sharing your response
with the rest of the group. Because the default reply address will be to the
group, you will need to locate the sender's email address within the body of
the message, copy it and paste it in the "Reply To" field (replacing
the list's address).
Unsubscribing
To
unsubscribe from a list, send an email message
from your email account to
listname-unsubscribe@lists.schools.com or
click on the appropriate list address below:
Problems
If you have ANY problems related to the TABS listservs, please do
not post them to the list. Send a message directly to the List
Manager for a quick and direct response.
Listserv Etiquette
- When responding to a list server message,
be concise. Only send a message to the entire
list when it contains information from which
everyone can benefit.
- Send messages such as "thanks for the information" or "me,
too" to individuals - not to the entire list.
Do this by using your e-mail application's
forwarding option and typing in or cutting
and pasting in the e-mail address of the individual
to whom you want to respond.
- Remember when setting your vacation message
to unsubscribe to the list server to prevent
the entire list from receiving your message.
- State concisely and clearly the specific
topic of your comments in the subject line.
- Include a portion or a summary of the message
you are responding to, but don't forward the
entire message.
- Stick to the topics intended for discussion
on the list server.
- Don't use all upper cases when writing. This
is thought of as shouting.
- Have an opening and closing in your message
such as dear... and bye...
- Be careful when using humor in your messages.
Use emoticons ;^} to get across your emotions.
- Include a signature tag on all messages.
Include your name, affiliation, location, and
e-mail address.
- Avoid angry expressions on the list server.
If you have a conflict with an individual,
settle it by private e-mail messages.
- Don't be critical of people's queries posted
to the list server. People may be new to the
list server. Send them a private message and "gently" make
suggestions if you think it is warranted.
- Keep a copy of the welcome email you receive
when you successfully sign-up with a list server.
This letter will contain tips for sending your
mail as well as how to unsubscribe from that mailing
list. You should store this message either on your
computer or print a hard copy and make a folder
of list servers that you belong to.
- By signing up with a list server, you are
not obligated to respond to all messages, or
to any message. Pick and choose the topics
that interest you. Look at the subject line
of the incoming messages to see which thread
of discussion is being addressed in that message.
In large list servers, several different threads
of discussions will be ongoing at one time.
- Unsubscribe if you'll be gone.
If you plan on being gone for more than a week
and will be unable to check your e-mail, you
should unsubscribe from the list and re-subscribe
upon your return.
- Never send attachments with e-mail messages
to individuals or to the list server without
prior permission from the recipient.
- Do not send administrative messages such
as "remove me from the list," through the list
server.
Rules and Regulations
Listservs are provided
as a service of The Association of Boarding Schools
(TABS). TABS listservs are "un-moderated",
meaning that the program broadcasts messages
to all current list subscribers with no editorial
review of messages before they are sent. TABS
does not verify the accuracy of submitted messages.
TABS accepts no responsibility for the opinions
and information posted on this site by others.
TABS disclaims all warranties with regard to
information posted on this site, whether posted
by TABS or any third party; this disclaimer includes
all implied warranties of merchantability and
fitness. In no event shall TABS be liable for
any special, indirect, consequential, or any
other damages whatsoever arising out of or in
connection with the use or performance of any
information posted on this site.
-
Any defamatory, abusive, profane, threatening,
offensive, or illegal materials are subject
to applicable laws. The author of, or participants
in, such comments or conversations may be held
liable for any consequences.
-
By posting material,
the posting party warrants and represents
that he or she owns the copyright with respect
to such material or has received permission
from the copyright owner to post the piece.
In addition, the posting party grants TABS
and users of this list the nonexclusive right
and license to display, copy, publish, distribute,
transmit, print, and use such information or
other material. Do not post any information
or other material protected by copyright without
the permission of the copyright owner.
-
Users
follow the advice or content obtained from
the listservs at their own risk. TABS
does not actively monitor the site for inappropriate
postings and does not undertake editorial
control of postings. However, in the event
that any inappropriate posting is brought to
TABS' attention, TABS will take reasonable
appropriate action. Please see the above disclaimer
relating to any reader's reliance on mailing
list postings.
-
Messages should not be posted
if they encourage or facilitate members to
arrive at any agreement that either expressly
or impliedly leads to price fixing, a boycott
of another's business, or other conduct intended
to, or that results in, illegally restricting
free trade. Messages that encourage or facilitate
an agreement about the following subjects
are inappropriate: prices, discounts, or terms
or conditions of sale; salaries; profits,
profit margins, or cost data; market shares,
sales territories, or markets; allocation of
customers or territories; or selection, rejection,
or termination of customers or suppliers. This
list is not exclusive. Any and all participants
leading to antitrust investigations or concerns
may be held liable for the same.
Conditions of Use The following behaviors should
be avoided on TABS listservs as all may lead
to termination or suspension of your list subscription:
-
Challenges or attacks on others. The discussions
on the lists are meant to stimulate conversation
not to create contention.
-
Postings of commercial
messages. The cyberspace term for this activity
is spamming. Contact people directly with
products and services that you believe would
be helpful.
-
Inappropriate
discussions relating to entities, products,
costs, rumors, and other similar matters.
Information posted on the lists is available
for all to see, and comments are subject to
libel, antitrust, and a variety of other laws.
-
Any and all defamatory, abusive,
profane, threatening, offensive, or illegal
materials. Do not post anything in a list
message that you would not want the world to
see or that you would not want anyone to know
came from you.
-
Postings of the same message to multiple
TABS lists. You may send your message only
to the most appropriate list
-
Inappropriate posting
of copyrighted material. See above for a
more complete definition of such a posting.
* If you do not accept the
mailing list rules, your list subscription will
be terminated. |
