Vote for Obama to speak at one of six high schools

Commencement

by Jeff Goldman | April 28, 2011

The White House this week launched the public review and rating process for the six high school finalists in the second annual Race to the Top High School Commencement Challenge. Rating will end this Friday, April 29 at 11:59pm ET.

President Obama has recorded a video encouraging people to rate the final six schools online - members of the public can view and rate the six finalists' videos at www.whitehouse.gov/commencement.

Hundreds of public schools across the country submitted applications to the Race to the Top Commencement Challenge earlier this year. School ratings were based on a short video from each school, as well as an essay on how each school is helping its students "win the future" and achieve the Commencement Challenge's goal of having the highest proportion of college graduates in the world by 2020.

According to the White House, the six finalists were selected based on their creativity in engaging and supporting students, academic results, and progress in preparing students to graduate college and prepare for a career.

The finalists' videos were produced with the help of Viacom and the Get Schooled Foundation, which provided each high school finalist with a producer and camera equipment - each school then worked with a team of students to create their video. Crews from Viacom's BET, MTV, CMT, Spike and Nickelodeon helped the students with pre-production, storyboarding, filming and editing over a three-day period. Viacom's mtvU also provided each school with a mentor to help them develop and execute their ideas.

The six finalists' videos are as follows:

  1. Bridgeport High School in Bridgeport, Washington
  2. Booker T. Washington High School in Memphis, Tennessee
  3. High Tech High International in San Diego, California
  4. Pittsburgh CAPA 6-12, School for Creative and Performing Arts in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
  5. Science Park High School in Newark, New Jersey
  6. Wayne Early Middle College High School in Goldsboro, North Carolina

The three schools with the highest average ratings will be announced next Monday, May 2, and the winner will be selected by President Barack Obama later next week. President Obama will visit the winning school to deliver the commencement address to the class of 2011, and senior administration officials will attend the commencements at the five runner-up schools.
