The fields in geography education include many categories, from cartography to climatology, economy to urban geography. Urban geography deals with primarily with cities, including water systems, transportation, green spaces and more. Urban geography goes hand in hand with urban planning, which deals with planning and construction of urban spaces. Urban planners may design traffic systems, water management plans and parks.

Urban planners must hold at least a bachelor's degree in urban planning, engineering or a related field. Many hold master's degrees or specialized degrees. Urban planners are generally employed by local, state, and federal governments.

You must have a solid background in architecture, mathematics, and physics to be a successful urban planner. You also have to have a strong education in geography and earth systems. Urban planners must also work well with others and have good communication skills since they usually work on teams with other experts.
