Gerontology counselors provide assistance to the elderly and their families, helping them cope with the lifestyle changes they may experience. Gerontology social workers often organize support groups for children with aging parents or educate elderly patients and their families about various housing, transportation, and long-term care options. In addition, some medical and public health social workers concentrate on diseases that mostly effect the elderly, like Alzheimer's, or work with the elderly in nursing facilities and hospices.
Gerontology Degrees and Career Training
To work in gerontology, you typically need at least a bachelor's degree, although many positions require advanced college degrees. You can earn a master's in social work (MSW) either on-campus or through online schools that offer gerontology degrees. Typical coursework may include biology, psychology, social work, sociology, and more. Gerontology counselors are often required to have a master's degree as well, although license requirements vary widely depending on the state, your specialty, and the setting in which you plan to work.
