What Do Welders Do?

Welders may specialize in one of the following areas:

  • Strategic Planning. Welders with trade school experience are typically hired to select and set up welding equipment, and may also examine welds to insure they meet standards or specifications.
  • Structural Fastening. Using flat, vertical, horizontal, and overhead welding machines, you'll create everything from ships, automobiles, and spacecraft to buildings, bridges, and piping.
  • Dismantling. Arc, plasma, and flame cutters dismantle large objects and re-purpose them for future use.
